Fawaz Al-Mubaraki

Wafra Chief Investment Officer/Executive Vice President of Alternative Investments

Fawaz Al-Mubaraki is the Chief Investment Officer of Wafra and an Executive Vice President and Head of the Alternative Investments Division.  Mr. Al-Mubaraki works closely with Wafra’s executive management in developing the strategic vision and overseeing key aspects of the firm.  He is also charged with assessing firm-wide investment activities. Mr. Al-Mubaraki is a member of the board of directors of Wafra Capital Partners Inc.  He joined Wafra in 1991, founded the Alternative Investments Division in 1994, and chairs the Investment Committee of the Alternative Investments Division.  From 1992 until 2012, Mr. Al-Mubaraki also served as a Portfolio Manager specializing in European markets in Wafra’s Securities Division.  He began his career as an analyst in the Managed Portfolio Department of the Public Institution for Social Security of Kuwait.  Mr. Al-Mubaraki earned a B.S. in Economics from Kuwait University.

James T. Gillies

Senior Managing Director/ Deputy Head of Alternative Investments

James T. Gillies, CFA, CAIA is a Senior Managing Director and the Deputy Head of Wafra’s Alternative Investments Division.  He joined Wafra in 2004 and is focused on the overall management of the division, as well as strategic investments in financial services firms and special opportunities.  Previously, Mr. Gillies was a Director and Principal of Channel Capital Group LLC. He began his career in 1997 as Co-Founder of www.hedgefund.net, one of the world’s leading sources for hedge fund information. Mr. Gillies earned a B.A. cum laude from Hamilton College, is a CFA charterholder, and holds the CAIA designation.

Russell J. Valdez

Senior Managing Director

Russell J. Valdez, J.D., is a Senior Managing Director in Wafra’s Alternative Investments Division. His responsibilities include overseeing various private investment activities of the division and the overall management of the division. Mr. Valdez leads investments in financial services firms and real asset opportunities. He serves on the board of directors of LOGIX Communications, Suntex Marinas and other portfolio investments. Previously, he was a corporate Associate at Covington & Burling LLP in New York practicing in private equity and mergers and acquisitions. His experience includes positions at Chemonics International and Visa Europe. Mr. Valdez earned his B.A. from Stanford University and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School.
